    Beautiful. Thanks for sharing Arnie. Wow. All of this makes me so emotional. The era, the costumes, the polished talent, the chops, the lambchop sideburns, the sweat and grind of a old fashioned gig. Truly one for the archives.

    Wow… I didn’t know that there is a good Queen cover on the Earth! I thought nobody could do this. It just approves that there are great voices, but they are hiding away, while those who can’t sing fill all the media. What a pity!

    All they got was a smattering of polite applause for that? They sung the operatic part live. LIVE. Even Queen didn’t do that part live because they had to perform this song so often.

      Thanks for watching and also for your comment. I invite you to compare this live performance with any 1976 live performance of this song by any band other than Queen. In fact Queen themselves rarely sung the entire song without tape backup for the operatic part. These 4 guys sing it with no overdubs or technological help of any kind.

      Ann was dear to me as well. Several years before her death, she brought me a DVD containing videos someone had shot during a show in Illinois. Since she lacked internet and the time to do it, she asked me to post the videos on RUclips to help her get gigs. Now they serve as a memory of Ann in her prime.

    What were the circumstances for recording this all the way back then?

    • @ArnieReed
      @ArnieReed 17 дней назад

      I'm glad you asked, because there's a lot more to this than meets the eye. From 1973-77 I played Wurlitzer Electric Piano in a band called Inner Light, which was booked by Washington Talent Agency. In 1976 their partner Omega Studios purchased a Panasonic High-Band video rig, which was one of the first experimental video tape machines. Everything was self-contained; the rig even came with its own microphones and video cameras. [This was before standards were set, so you could only play the tape on the same model of machine on which it was recorded.] The agency wanted to show prospective customers what their bands looked & sounded like without sending them out to gigs to see them in person. In October 1976 they rented out the Bastille, a night club in suburban Maryland in College Park, near the U. of Md. They had purchased one 1" open reel tape, which was just enough to record their two top bands, which included my band plus "Sixpence." One year later Omega upgraded its video rig and sold the old one. I purchased the tape reel for $25.00, but it took 38 years to find a guy in Burbank CA who identified what it was recorded on and found a machine that could play it, thanks to a happy coincidence. It turns out that one week prior, he had spoken to a colleague in PA who owned probably the last working model of the Panasonic Hi-Band, of which less than 200 were made in 1974. Sixpence and Inner Light were Washington Talen's top bands, and we played regularly. During my 3 1/2 years with Inner Light, we played 362 gigs, and that we while working a full-time day job and raising a family. So we were both prepared to play the songs we had chosen from our repertoire. Since there was only one reel of tape, there were no do-overs or overdubs. Everything was recorded live. Postscript: One month later Inner Light was chosen to play for the Democratic National Committee's Election Night watch at the Statler-Hilton hotel in Washington DC. It was a highlight of my time with the band. You may want to view the video playlist of both bands: Inner Light (The last 2 videos document Election Night 1976 plus a slideshow about the tape saga): ruclips.net/p/PL1O5w_w6TcCbkX_QfkPaSfInL8lYot11h&si=F0eSv6Hg7_JrOHrf Sixpence: ruclips.net/p/PL1O5w_w6TcCZx9kOINA0WKBJGpIvZi-Am If you like live videos of bands performing, subscribe to my channel and start browsing more than 2,500 such videos. ruclips.net/user/ArnieReed

      The mics were part of the Panasonic video rig. Back then video formats changed with each make and model. All the components including the video cameras, came together in one package. Because Panasonic made only a hundred or so of these machines, it took me 38 years to find someone who could transfer this material to digital so we can enjoy it.
